How Health & Wellness Coaching Helps You
A lot of people ask me what health and wellness coaching actually means. They've heard the term — it's everywhere now — but they don't really know what a coach does, or how they'd benefit from one.
What does a coach really do?
Simply put, a coach is a partner who works with you to achieve goals you set for your own health and wellbeing. Coaches build a support system around you — evoking your internal strengths, connecting you with external resources, and helping you develop the self-management strategies that make healthy changes actually stick.
Here's an example. Say you live with a chronic condition — diabetes, hypertension — and your goal is to reduce your dependence on medicines, having felt their side effects. You've done your research: changing food habits and lifestyle can genuinely help. You visit a nutritionist, get a personalised diet plan, and resolve to exercise daily.
Then reality arrives. The complete overturn of your diet is overwhelming. You eat well for a few days, then the cravings pull you back. The discipline you counted on doesn't show up on demand. You're not weak — you're human. A 2018 American study found that only 4% of people stuck to all of their resolutions, and just 8% managed most of them.
This is exactly where coaching comes in
People don't fail to change because they lack information. They fail because they lack structure, accountability and someone in their corner. A coach helps you set goals you'll actually keep, tracks progress with you week by week, and keeps you moving when motivation dips — which it always does.
What areas can a coach help with?
Plenty: managing chronic conditions like diabetes, thyroid issues and hypertension; stress and anxiety; weight; eating habits; fitness goals; finding meaning and purpose; recovering from a major setback; and breaking out of addictive patterns.
